Designer Anjali Stewart & Rachel Easting
Based Wellington
Since its creation in 2006, directional label twenty-seven names has inspired a cult-like
following. With art and fashion degree backgrounds respectively, designers Rachel Easting and Anjali Stewart cite contemporary art as the basis for their collections. Their label is ever migrating and can be found nationwide as well as in stores across Australia, the U.K, and Hong Kong. The summer 09/10 collection draws on the work of an iconic musician, and a provocative performance artist. The collection’s name Jimi James and the Blue Flames, is taken from the wild child of rock’s first band, and a taste of Hendrix’s revolutionary folk-chic resounds across the collection. The influence of Vanessa Beecroft’s eerie works, which raise questions around how models function as works of art, can be seen though the collection’s dedication to muted nude tones. The resulting range is part rebel part dancer, rich with suede tassels, lace and passementerie.
